Chatham is essentially two municipalities — Chatham Borough on the train line and Chatham Township to the south — that share a school district and an architectural language. Most of the housing here is Colonial Revival from the post-war boom, with a meaningful chunk of older Victorian and Federal homes on the streets nearest the Borough's downtown.

The story of a Chatham roof is usually a tree story. Mature oaks and maples shade most of the lots, which is beautiful and also problematic — north-facing roofs grow moss, gutters fill weekly in fall, and every windstorm brings down a few limbs.
